World News - Tunisian authorities have said they immediately prosecute former President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali with 18 charges, including the removal of life and smuggling of narcotics.
Justice Minister Lazhar Karoui Chebbi said that indictments are part of the 44 charges against Ben Ali, his family and his former ministers. International arrest warrant for Ben Ali has been issued.
He was ousted in January by a popular uprising. He then fled to Saudi Arabia.
Authorities say they have arrested 33 members of his family, accused of stealing kecurgaan country's resources.
In an interview on state television on Thursday (14 / 4), Chebbi said the 18 cases that law had been prepared against Ben Ali. "The indictment includes charges of plotting against the state, the removal of human lives, and the use and circulation of narcotics," he said as reported by state news agency Tap.
Chebbi said the authorities had issued a request to Interpol to freeze the assets of Ben Ali and his family, and said that a delegation will go to Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France, in order to accelerate the implementation of the request.
Ben Ali was accused issued orders to security forces to quell a popular uprising that began in mid-December 2010.
The UN estimates that 219 people died in the upheaval in Tunisia, including 72 people in the various prisons in the country. This amount is much higher than figures released by the Tunisian authorities.
