Dundee United have dismissed reports that manager Peter Houston is facing the sack as "simply speculation".

Houston, 53, has guided the Terrors to just two Scottish Premier League wins this season and his side are currently third-bottom of the table, with only Dunfermline and Inverness Caley Thistle below them.

Reports in the Scottish press have suggested that the club's poor form, which included a defeat to second-tier outfit Falkirk in the League Cup on Tuesday, has led Dundee United's hierarc hy to consider Houston's future.

But the club have moved to reject such rumours, insisting that Houston - who won the 2010 Scottish Cup with the Terrors and led them to a fourth-placed finish last season - is not on the verge of being fired.

"The club have no comment to make on what is simply speculation and rumour regarding the manager's position," a Dundee United statement read.

"Everyone at the club is fully committed to Saturday's game against Dunfermline and trying to get the club further up the SPL table."
