Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo is rumored to be willing to negotiate a surrender himself. Gbagbo himself actually has no right to power because it has lost the elections last November.
"Gbagbo seems to be willing to negotiate to surrender himself," said Ally Coulibaly, Ivory Coast Ambassador to France who was appointed President-elect Allasanne Quattara.
"Abidjan became barn gossip and I do not want to add it. All I knew since yesterday Gbagbo continued to find a gap for negotiation, this is certainly not too late," said the diplomat told French radio RFI, on Tuesday (05/04/2011).
Coulibaly not know whether Gbagbo will do this directly or negotiations involving a mediator. If true Gbagbo decided to negotiate, then open the way for Quattara rise as the new President of the Ivory Coast.
In the election last November, Gbagbo was lost from Quattara. But he was reluctant to give the presidency to Quattara chosen by the people.
As a result, Gbagbo to use its influence to maintain power.
For nearly three months, forces loyal to Gbagbo clashed with troops Quattara.
The fighting caused hundreds of people were reportedly killed. Most of the victims killed were supporters and riot Quattara also forced one million people fled the Ivory Coast.
