Rita Moreno, George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn, who played Anita, Bernardo and Riff fifty years ago in 'West Side Story,' stopped by 'The Talk' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS) to reminisce about making the classic American musical. Perez Hilton was guest-hosting, and began by announcing, "I am such a show queen; I love 'West Side Story'!" He then launched into his best Anita impression and sang a bit from 'America'. He reminded Moreno of the Oscar she won for her performance and she countered by reminding him that she also won a Golden Globe.
The actors shared that they didn't know how the movie would be received while they were making it. George Chakiris recalled, "There were two guys in suits. One of them said 'We think we might have an artistic success, but we're not at all sure about a commercial success."
The movie would go on to win ten Oscars, including Best Picture. And fifty years later, its popularity and relevance are just as strong. Last week's 'Glee', entitled 'The First Time' featured a McKinley High rendition the musical and the episode was one of the show's most controversial to date.
