['The Vampire Diaries' -- 'Smells Like Teen Spirit']

After last week's amazing episode, I wasn't sure that the 'The Vampire Diaries' writers could possibly top it -- but they came pretty close with 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.' Elena stakes Stefan, Katherine possibly bites the dust (really!), Rebekah stakes Damon and Vicki comes back from the dead to try and kill Elena. There was so much possible near-death in this episode that I thought one of our main three would finally bite the big one, but alas, our love triangle remains -- unlike Katherine, who may very well be dead (like, dead dead.)

Perhaps Katherine should of thought twice before awakening Michael, the "badass vampire vampire hunter" because as it turned out, she became his midnight snack. Does this mean the end of Katherine? I hope not because let's face it, 150-year-old Nina Dobrev is so much more interesting than 18-year-old Nina Dobrev.

However, Elena is starting to become a little badass. Seriously! She goes all Buffy after getting an early more staking lesson from Ric. Looks like Elena is tired of everyone telling her she's weak, so she obviously watched all seven seasons of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' over the summer because this episode, I actually liked Elena. For the first time, she showed true strength, and in some ways, she even reminded me of Katherine.

And then there's Stefan, who's channeling his inner Season 1 Damon.

I have a confession to make: I love playboy Stefan. He's much more fun now that he's a full-on heartless vamp, and Paul Wesley played the part perfectly. However, was it just me, or did we see a part of the old Stefan tonight? It's hard to tell whether Stefan is protecting Elena because she's "Klaus' blood bag" (as he so eloquently put it), or because he still cares for her. He seemed somewhat softer this episode. Of course, it could be because Klaus has disappeared, but I have another theory.

Now, this is just a thought, but after that scene with Elena and Stefan by the bleachers, it made me think that maybe, just maybe, Stefan hasn't been a ripper after all? Maybe he's going along with Klaus to protest Elena, like a vampire double agent? I mean, if there can be a vampire vampire hunter, there could be a vampire double agent, right?!

Of course, that would mean we would have to say goodbye to all of that lovely Delena action. And there were quite a few sexually charged Delena scenes this episode.

Meanwhile, it's the first day of school, which means that this episode marks exactly one year since the start of the season -- and since Elena and Stefan fell in love.

It's also the start of senior year, and everyone has boyfriend drama. Who has it worst? The girl who's boyfriend is in love with his ex-girlfriend's ghost? The girl who's boyfriend is a weird vampire/werewolf hybrid. Or the girl who's boyfriend is a serial killer/ripper? Yeah, Elena wins that one ... or more like loses.

While Elena, Ric and Damon are scheming to find a way to knock some sense into Stefan, Caroline and Bonnie have their own boyfriend dramas to deal with.

Bonnie is jealous that Jeremy has been spending too much time with his ghostly ex-girlfriend Anna, and judging from tonight's episode, she has every reason to be. Jeremy can't stop thinking about Anna, and she can't stop thinking of him -- and then it turns out that they can feel each other! Because, you know, anything can happen in this town. But seriously, how can they feel each other?!

Tyler is a hybrid and proud, not to mention a borderline cocky "d-bag" -- Caroline's words, not mine. He claims that Klaus has given him "this gift." You know, the gift to get out of practice early and go get drunk at the bonfire. Not to mention that Tyler seems to be Klaus' number one fan. Apparently, he's been sired. Since Klaus' blood made him, he feels loyal to Klaus. Now this is going to cause a few problems. Not to mention that Rebekah has taken a new liking to Klaus' new hybrid.

And even though Tyler promises Caroline that his love for her comes first, on this show, promises are meant to be broken. After Caroline leaves, Rebekah temps Tyler with a human, and even though he tries to keep his promise to Caroline, his inner vamp -- and dedication to Klaus -- wins this inner battle.

Now, who can't can't wait for the epic cat-fight between Caroline and Rebekah?! There is some serious friction between those two, and it's definitely going to boil over soon.

Meanwhile, Matty can finally see Vicki's ghost, but there's something that Vicki needs his help with ... and it's kind of sketchy. Basically, Vicki needs Matty's help to resurrect her from the dead. People, this is Mystic Falls, anything can happen.

But nothing's ever as easy as it seems. Turns out to keep her new resurrected status, Vicki needs to kill Elena and stop Klaus from making his army of hybrids. Of course Matty did know this when he resurrected her, but Anna did! And this is why I love Anna. Because in a town full of immortal crazies, she's the voice of reason -- even though she's kind of a boyfriend-stealing ghost.

So now Bonnie and Matty are on a mission to save Elena, who's on a mission with Ric and Damon to save Stefan. Turns out Vicki's plan was pretty twisted. With the help of a witch "on the other side," she uses magic to trap Elena in a car before setting the car on fire. But good thing her BFF Bonnie is a witch because with the help of Matt, Bonnie is able to break the witches spell, just in time for Stefan to awaken from the back of the car and kick the door open, saving Elena once again.

However, saving Elena and breaking the spell means bad news for Vicki, who now must return to the other side. She was just lonely! No, but really, it's time for her to go. Matt says one final emotional goodbye to Vicki, telling her that he's finally ready to move on. Oh, burn! But is she really gone? This is Mystic Falls after all.

Best lines of the night:

--This might just be the best line of the season, naturally from Damon, referring to Rebekah: "We have a new house guest, Barbie Klaus."

--Okay, another great line from Damon, to Elena: "Come on Buffy."

--Best playboy Stefan line: "These ladies are helping me be all that I can be."

--Sappiest line of the night, from Tyler to Caroline: "Everything I like about me is you."

--Best d-bag Stefan line, to Elena: "I've been assigned to protect Klaus' human blood bag."

--Most ironic line of the night, from Vicki: "In a town of vampires, werewolves and witches, I'll fit right in."

--Favorite Stefan/Elena scene: "I know who you are better than anyone Stefan, and I'm not giving up," said Elena. "Do you have any idea how pathetic that makes you?," asks Stefan. "No Stefan, that makes me strong." And then Stefan takes a stake to the stomach. Brilliant.

--Might I add that Rebekah and Damon might have had the most sexually charged marshmallow roasting session ever.
