World News - Observer Institute Human Rights Watch (HRW) accused the security forces and Syrian intelligence of torture against hundreds of anti-government protesters who were arrested.

HRW also said the lawyers, activists and journalists who support or organize demonstrations also were detained.

Reportedly dozens of people were killed in demonstrations calling for President Bashar al-Assad's political reform.

HRW issued a torture allegations were based on interviews with 19 people detained by members of the intelligence, the Mukhabarat, in Damascus, Deraa, Duma, al-Tal, Homs and Banias, as well as interviews with several families of the detained. HRW also interviewed two women and adolescents aged 16-17 years.

HRW said, has reviewed photographs of people who have been freed in Deraa. Their bodies had marks of torture.

"All the detainees except two who were arrested while demonstrating at HRW says that members of the mukhabarat hit when captured and detained them. They also witnessed dozens of other prisoners being beaten or hear the screams of people being beaten, "said a statement issued by HRW as quoted by AFP on Friday (04/15/2011).

The detainee told HRW that they were also tortured with electric shock devices, cables, and a whip. A statement issued by HRW also said the prisoners were detained in a cell full and many of them were deprived of food, drink, and sleep.
