Steve Bruce is reported to have been offered the Hull City manager's job.
Bruce, who was sacked by Sunderland in November after a poor run of results, could return to management at the KC Stadium if the BBC Humberside reports are confirmed.
Hull have been searching for a new boss since sacking Nick Barmby last month after comments he made to the media. Barmby had been in charge of the Championship club for less than six months.
Speaking after the decision - against which Barmby unsuccessfully appealed - the Hull vice-chairman, Ehab Allam, told the club's website: "The reason for the dismissal relates to co mments made in recent interviews.
"The comments concerned were wholly misleading and implied that the board had not made funds available to Nick to strengthen the first-team squad during the January transfer window. This is completely untrue.
"The board consider the comments made by Nick unjustifiably cast public doubt on the honesty and integrity of the board and its members."
If Bruce takes the reins, Hull will be the eighth club of a managerial career that has taken in spells at Sheffield United, Huddersfield, Wigan, Crystal Palace, Birmingham, Wigan and Sunderland.
