(CNN) -- Euro 2012 co-hosts Poland and 2004 champions Greece opened the tournament with a dramatic 1-1 draw in Warsaw.

Robert Lewandowski's first-half header was cancelled out by Greece substitute Dimitris Salpingidis' second-half goal, but the goalscorers barely told the tale of a remarkable opening match.

Both sides had a player sent off - Sokratis Papastathopoulos for Greece and Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny -- before the Arsenal goalkeeper's replacement Przemyslaw Tyton emerged as the hero by saving a penalty from Giorgos Karagounis.

There had been little hint of the drama to come in an opening 20-minute spell dominated by the co-hosts -- deservedly underlined by Lewandowski's 17th-minute header.

But the depleted Greeks hit back strongly in the second half and levelled on 51 minutes when Salpingidis pounced to fire into an empty net after Szczesny had failed to gather a cross.

Salpingidis changed the game and drew the foul that saw Szczesny dismissed before seeing a late header hit the back of the Polish net only to be ruled out for an earlier offside.
