Milan had denied that the defender was for sale, but are reported to have been tempted to do a deal after the French club increased their offer to £40 million.

Galliani travelled to Paris on Tuesday to hold talks with PSG officials, sparking an angry reaction from Milan fans who want Thiago Silva to stay at the club. "It will be a long negotiation process with PSG,'' he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Thiago S ilva, 27, is also reported to be a target for Manchester City, Chelsea and Barcelona, and is under contract with Milan until June 2016.

"Silva is a player that you cannot substitute, regardless of the amount of money offered," Milan striker Antonio Cassano said. "Thiago makes up 50% of the squad."

Former AC Milan captain Paolo Maldini said he would be surprised if the Rossoneri let Thiago Silva leave because the transfer would be "a sign of weakness".

"He is the great defender there is in the world right now and Milan cannot do without him," he said.
