Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie has underlined the importance of Arsenal's qualification for next season's Champions League, something which is highly likely to influence whether the club's top scorer remains at the Emirates Stadium beyond the summer.

Van Persie, who has said that failure to get into Europe's top competition next season is "unthinkable", will discuss his future at the north London outfit once Sunday's final game of the campaign against West Brom is out of the way.

Arsenal lie in third going into the final game of the seas on and could finish as low as fifth, but that eventuality is not on the Dutchman's radar.

"It doesn't matter if I score or not. I honestly don't care just as long as we win," he said in the Sun ahead of Sunday's deciding round of fixtures.

"When we have finally done it I will sit down with the boss Arsene Wenger and the chief executive Ivan Gazidis at the end of the season and discuss my contract with them.

"For now, though, my focus is simply guiding Arsenal to the Champions League so the situation has not changed."

Wenger admitted that failure to guarantee a Champions League spot could well prove to be a deciding factor in Van Persie's future, and the player himself has intimated that the prospect of not participating in the competition is a hard one to consider.

"I am very proud to be captain of Arsenal Football Club," he said. "I truly love this club and, whatever happens in the future, I am a Gunner and I will always be a Gunner.

"And that's why I will do everything to make sure we win [against West Brom] because it's unthinkable that Arsenal will not be in the Champions League.

"It's where Europe's top clubs meet to decide who is the best of the best and you want to be in there - you have to be in there.

"The good thing is it's still in our hands, still in our grasp. We know there can be no more slip-ups."
