Dunfermline boss Jim Jefferies took consolation from the fact Hibernian's 'ghost goal' was not decisive as his side were relegated from the Scottish Premier League.

Hibernian awarded a ghost goal

• Hibernian 4-0 Dunfermline

Dunfermline were condemned to the drop as they were defeated 4-0 at Easter Road, with Matt Doherty, Eoin Doyle and Garry O'Connor scoring before Paul Hanlon's late effort was awarded despite failing to cross the line.

The strike has reopened the debate over goal-line technology, and Jefferies believes the officials have an impossible task.

"I was standing there with just as good a view of it as the linesman and I couldn't tell," he said. "The ball was travelling so fast it was impossible to tell, so how they can make a decision based on that I'm not sure. They'd have to have amazing eyesight to get it right."

He added: "I've seen the replay and I can't believe it. Let's just be thankful we weren't relegated on that. He shouldn't even have attempted to give it, because it was an impossible one to tell if it was over the line or not.

"Thank God it didn't matter. We'll let him away with it."
