Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta will end his eight-year association with the club when his contract expires at the end of June.

Barnetta, 27, has rejected Leverkusen's offer of a new deal and is set to leave the BayArena, where he has been playing since arriving from hometown club St Gallen in 2004.

The Switzerland international was heavily tipped to join Newcastle last summer but a move failed to materialise and it is not clear whether he already has a new club lined up.

"Tranquillo has turned down our offer and he will leave us on June 30," Bayer general manager Wolfgang Holzhauser said.

"This is very regrettable because we wanted to extend his contract, but we could not reach an agreement financially."

Barnetta was out for most of the 2011-12 season with a serious knee injury but began to come back into the first-team fold towards the end of the season.

His final game for Leverkusen was the 4-1 away victory at Nurnberg earlier this month.
