Wilshere, 20, has not kicked a ball in anger for the Gunners this season, having broken down in the pre-season Emirates Cup on August 1 last year.

His ankle suffered a stress fracture and he underwent surgery in September which was expected to rule him out for four to five months. However, he suffered a recurrence in February and has not been able to return to full training.

Speaking after Arsenal's surprise loss at home to Wigan, Wenger said: "Jack Wilshere will not play again this season and will not go to the Euros, that is for sure.

"He is not ready to practice today or next week. He makes progress, but slow progress.

"What is for sure is he will not be ready for the end of the season and not for the Euros. He is devestated, and you can understand that.''

"Gutted, sad, devastated..its been a test mentally for me this season and it will continue to be tough until I am back out on the pitch," Wilshere added himself on Twitter. "My ankle is good, I just have a few niggles and having been out so long I will not be fit enough for the Euro's!"

"I hope England can do well and bring home the cup! I will be watching and cheering the boys on like a proper england fan!"

Wilshere was a first-choice midfielder under Fabio Capello but the new, as-yet unidentified, England coach will have to do without his talents.

Last summer saw Wenger pull Wilshere from playing in the European Under-21 Championship because of fears of burn-out after a full fir st season in the Premier League with Arsenal.
