Quevilly, from the Haute-Normandy region of Northern France, will now meet Lyon on April 28 after another astonishing upset, which followed on from the quarter-final defeat of Marseille.

They trailed to an early strike from Julien Feret, but Karim Herouat notched an equaliser before Anthony Laup scored in stoppage-time to spark wild celebrations at the Stade Michel d'Ornano.

"The first half was complicated, it was very timid and there was a lack of risk-taking,'' Brouard said. "We knew they would have control of the ball, but in the second half we went further in our decision-making and it resulted in an incredible evening.

"It is the charm of the Coupe de France. The shining star on this team in the Coupe de France has sparkled."

Brouard's opposite number, Frederic Antonetti, refused to feel any sympathy for his players.

He said: "It goes beyond disappointment. I will not defend the indefensible - I knew we lacked character and it was confirmed. We were favourites and were not psychologically able to handle it."
