The agent of Manchester United defender Fabio has revealed there is a "high possibility" that he will move to Benfica this summer.

Press reports have claimed that Fabio could move to Benfica on loan for the 2012-13 season as part of a £20 million deal to bring long-term target Nicolas Gaitan to Old Trafford. Federico Macheda is expected to move to the Estadio da Luz on a permanent basis too.

Agent Cassiano Pereira has now fuelled that speculation by confirming Benfica's interest.

"There is a high possibility that Fabio will go to Benfica," he told O Jogo. "Alex Ferguson has talked with me and Fabio about this possibility and the next two to three weeks we should know our position."

Sir Alex Ferguson had confirmed on Sunday in his programme notes for the game against Aston Villa that Fabio would be sent out for a season.

"Fabio will go on loan next season to give him concentrated first-team experience," Sir Alex said. "We have already talked to him and he understands the value of playing regularly at a higher level than we can give him at the moment."

Inter Milan and Paris Saint Germain have also been linked with Argentina international Gaitan. He played in both Champions League group games against United this season, creating Oscar Cardozo's goal in the first match in Portugal.

Gaitan's agent, Jorge Mendes, arranged the transfers of Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani to the club.
