The match appeared to be heading for a draw after goals by Jozy Altidore and Roy Beerens for AZ had been cancelled out by a brace from Jeremain Lens, but Matavz sealed all the points when he turned the ball home after Esteban Alvarado flapped at Lens' late cross.

AZ, second at the start of the match, are now just a point ahead of PSV. AZ trail leaders Ajax by three points but that is likely to extend to six when the Amsterdammers host lowly De Graafschap on Sunday.

Feyenoord put themselves level on points with AZ with a routine 3-0 win overExcelsior at De Kuip.

Prolific on-loan striker John Guidetti's early goal gave them a half-time lead and Jordy Clasie and Jerson Cabral ensured victory before the hour mark.

FC Twente's chances of claiming the title suffered a blow as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to NAC Breda.

Alex Schalk put the visitors ahead on 56 minutes and, while a brace from Luuk de Jong put Twente 2-1 up, a last-gasp Nourdin Boukhari equaliser meant the spoils were shared.
The result leaves Twente fourth, a point behind AZ and Feyenoord.

Bas Dost made it 24 goals in 13 games with a hat-trick as Heerenveen came from two goals down to win 4-2 at NEC Nijmegen .

The home side had led with two goals from Genero Zeefuik in the first half but Dost netted after 66, 71 and 80 minutes before Oussama Assaidi made sure of the points with a goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
