Jose Luis Quinonez scored in the third minute of injury time to secure
Ecuadorian side Emelec's place in the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores with a 3-2
win victory at Olimpia, which eliminated Brazilian giants Flamengo.
The Guayaquil-based side didn't start well in their battle for second place in Group
Two as they ended the first half 1-0 down courtesy of Walter Castorino's 45th
minute-strike. But they reacted after half-time and went ahead thanks to goals from Marcos
Mondaini and Luis Mena.
In the second minute of injury time, striker Pablo Zeballos made it 2-2, a
scoreline which meant Flamengo only needed a victory over Argentinian side Lanus
in Rio to advance.
They easily achieved their side of the equation, winning 3-0 with goals by
Wellinton, Deivid and Luiz Antonio, but in the last move of the game in Paraguay
Quinonez headed home a corner from Enner Valencia to give Emelec their place in
the last 16.
The few Emelec supporters in Paraguay went wild, while silence reigned among
the Flamengo fans in Rio.
"I can't believe this. This will be remembered in the history of the Copa
Libertadores," Emelec coach Marcelo Fleitas said. "The boys showed they are warriors. They lifted Ecuadorian football in a very
high place."
Lanus ended at the top of the pool with 10 points, one more than Emelec and two
ahead Flamengo.
Meanwhile, Paraguayan side Libertad ended top of Group Five as they came from a
goal behind to defeat Alianza Lima 2-1 in Peru. The hosts went ahead at through Cristopher Hurtado's goal but Nestor Camacho
and Jose Nunez secured the victory Jorge Burruchaga's side.
The other team to reach for the next stage were Vasco da Gama, who defeated
Uruguayan giants Nacional 1-0 in Montevideo. The only goal of the match was scored by Diego Souza.
Both Libertad and Vasco ended with 13 points, but the Paraguayans had a better
goal difference.
