The American went down the Kandahar 2 course in one minute 44.86 seconds for her 25th downhill record win.
With exactly half her career wins in the sport's most prestigious discipline, Vonnalso became the second most successful downhill specialist behind Austrian Anne- Marie Moser-Proell, who won 62 races overall, 36 of them downhills.
Yet it was a far from perfect performance by the Olympic champion, who was not the fastest in the key flat section at the start and made a huge mistake halfway down.
However, her edge over her rivals was such that it was still enough for victory.
"It's a special victory for several reasons. First because it's my 50th and I wanted to hit this mark but also to equal Alberto Tomba, for all he meant for the sport.
"It's also special because I did not fare too well here last year at the world championships," said Vonn, who finished second behind Austria's Elisabeth Goergl at the world championships.
"And finally it was not a clear-cut race from start to finish. I made several big mistakes that might have cost dearly."
Swiss Nadja Kamer, back in action this season after a spectacular crash in Are a year ago, was second for her fourth career podium.
The tall 26-year-old skier was fastest on the upper part, perhaps helped by her early start with bib number three.
Diminutive Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein was third for her third medal spot of the winter after Lake Louise in December and St Moritz last weekend.
Relieved by her first laurels of the season in St Moritz last week, local hero Maria Hoefl-Riesch missed the podium by only 0.20 of a second. Vonn will again be the favorite in Sunday's Super-G, hoping to clinch her 10th victory of the season on the same Kandahar 2 course.
