Thriving in games that extend beyond overtime, Varlamov improved to 6-0 in shootouts this season.
"Nothing special. I don't know, maybe good luck," Varlamov told reporters, explaining his success.
"I don't like shootouts. We play shootouts a lot. I just try to stay on the ice and wait to see what the player going to do. Just wait, wait, wait."
Ryan O'Reilly tied the game for Colorado at 14:17 in the third before they survived a scoreless overtime and got a winning shootout goal from Milan Hejduk, the only one allowed in the session.
It was the eighth win in nine games for the Avalanche (22-18-1) while Los Angeles (19-14-7) remained one point ahead of San Jose at the top of the Pacific division despite the loss.
The Kings have earned a point in all seven contests under new coach Darryl Sutter but were left lamenting their latest defeat.
Los Angeles had a goal disallowed in the first period and also squandered a power-play with 1:35 left in overtime. They finished 0-for-5 on power-play chances.
"I thought we played hard. We played our game we just stop shooting the puck in the second," Sutter said.
The Kings held a 12-5 advantage on shots after the first and outshot the Avs 32-21 for the game.
Jonathan Quick, who had his shutout spoiled late in the third, finished with 20 saves.
