A 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday saw Wolves drop into the relegation zone and with McCarthy's side without a win in ten games, rumours have been circulating that he may be facing the sack.

However, the former Sunderland and Ireland boss feels he could not have done anymore to get his side firing and says he chooses to simply ignore calls for his head.

"The biggest reason as to how I cope is that I don't listen to the backdrop of what fans are saying," McCarthy said. "I do not go around in a glass cabinet - I am fully aware of what is going on.

"If you listen to it, you would go off your head anyway. I just make sure I get on with it with [assistant manager] Terry Connor, [goalkeeping coach] Pat Mountain and [development coach] Steve Weaver and we try to find a result.

"It is a results business but performances have been very good. We have played very well in recent weeks and I cannot question the perfomances at all. I would not have done anything differently against Chelsea and Tottenham and I could not have done anything to make us any better."

Meanwhile, McCarthy says he has the support of Wolves owner Steve Morgan in the transfer market but stressed that he will not be making any panic buys in January.

"If there was a player there for us to sign, and it's one we can do, then he (Morgan) would be supportive," McCarthy said. "But it is difficult to get anyone - and particularly anyone who fits straight into the team.

"Trying to get someone in, who has been in an around the Premier League and understands it, is very hard. There is nothing imminent but we will keep on trying. It's got to be someone who will improve the team, not just to fill up the squad.''
