QPR have made a £5 million bid for Blackburn defender Christopher Samba, but ESPNsoccernet has learned that manager Steve Kean might not be able to spend all the money he acquires through player sales.
As clubs such as Spurs, QPR and Newcastle circle Blackburn in pursuit of their top stars such as Samba and Junior Hoilett, a source with impeccable connections to the turmoil facing Kean and Rovers has alerted ESPNsoccernet to the problems ahead for the club's manager in the January transfer window.
Kean wants Andrew Johnson, Chris Gunter, Bradley Orr, Nedum Onuoha and Esteban Granero but the source said: "Will the manager be able to re-invest money from sales into buying new players? That is the question the club have not yet answered.
"The problem appears to be the £18 million overdraft facility at Barclays Bank. Not all the money from the sale of Phil Jones went into player recruitment; it might only have been £10 million of the £16 million basic amount, as money was needed to reduce the bank overdraft.
"That overdraft has come down, but how much influence is the bank now applying to the owners, and insisting on a certain amount of player sales going to the bank?
"Clearly Junior Hoilett is coming to the end of his contract this summer and has so far not re-signed, so it would make sense to sell him now rather than risk him going for free in the summer.
"However, is there any point in the manager selling his best players, if he cannot be assured of all the money to buy the players he wants, if indeed this is what is happening?
"Chris Samba is wanted by plenty of clubs, Spurs, Newcastle, QPR ... the manager might be thinking it is better to keep Samba than risk some of the money going back to the bank and he doesn't get the player he needs.
"There are, of course, other players the manager can sell, such as Steven N'Zonzi, Martin Olsen, and a few others, but would they get a descent price?"
Kean would expect a large chunk of the value of any sales to be reinvested into new players and it could make for a fascinating end to the January transfer window at Ewood Park.
