Real Madrid consolidated their place at the top of the Primera Division with a 4-1 victory over neighbours Atletico as Barcelona slumped to a shock defeat at Getafe.
Atletico had not beaten their city rivals for 12 years but a change of fortunes seemed on the cards when Adrian Lopez fired them in front. However, the dismissal of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois after 20 minutes turned the game on its head, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring from the penalty spot.
Ronaldo then provided the second for Angel Di Maria, while Gonzalo Higuain punished Atletico for poor defending by stealing in to notch the third. The dismissal of Diego Godin added to Atletico's misery as Ronaldo sealed his second from the spot.
Champions Barcelona slipped six points behind leaders Real as they lost 1-0 away to Getafe.
Pep Guardiola's side dominated possession but were out of sorts throughout the clash at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, and rarely looked like securing the win they so desperately wanted.
And after Madrid's earlier victory against city rivals Atletico, Barca were sent home empty-handed as full-back Juan Valera headed an unlikely winner for Getafe in the 67th minute.
Valencia tightened their grip on third place in the Primera Division as they survived a late fightback to claim a 2-1 victory at Rayo Vallecano.
Jonas Goncalves started the scoring in the 7-0 romp over Genk in the Champions League on Wednesday and the Brazilian got the b all rolling again for Unai Emery's side with a fine strike from 25 yards after 20 minutes.
Diego Alves was forced into saves from Alejandro Arribas and Andrija Delibasic either side of the break to preserve the lead, but Tino Costa made sure of the points with a trademark finish at the end of a flowing Valencia counter-attack 10 minutes into the second half.
