Jordan Henderson says that Liverpool fans have yet to see the best of him, but claims he is keen to prove himself worthy of a regular first XI spot.
Henderson, 21, has made 13 appearances for Kenny Dalglish's men since joining in the summer for a fee that could eventually reach £20 million. But the England Under-21 captain admits he "hasn't set the world alight" and thinks he has more to offer.
"I think it's been a little bit up and down, if I'm honest," Henderson told Liverpool's official website. "I haven't set the world alight but I haven't played badly either.
"In my mind I've got a lot more to offer, there's a lot more to come, but I've got to keep working hard on the training pitch and in games and I'm sure things will come off sooner or later."
The former Sunderland midfielder has spent more time on the bench than he expected, but says he will work hard to make sure that Dalglish has no choice but to start him.
"That's part of football," he said. "I'm not going to lie, it does hurt, and I'm sure it hurts anyone who doesn't start, but it means you have to work even harder to get in the team.
"It means you have to prove a point that you should be starting, so whenever my chance comes I have to take it and make sure I'm not on the bench very often."
Henderson also said that he was relishing the chance to prove himself under the microscope at a club like Liverpool.
"When you're at Liverpool there is always going to be expectancy and pressure when you play but that's part and parcel of football," he continued. "It's how yo u deal with it. Some people do much better and some people crumble under pressure. To play for Liverpool you've got to have a lot of character about you.
"I like to play under pressure. I expected it to be a huge club with huge expectancy and that's exactly what it is. The players have been brilliant, the staff have been brilliant."
