This season of 'Dancing With the Stars' has its share of controversy. We've had Nipplegate, injuries, accusations of nepotism, dancers feuding with judges, dancers feuding with each other ... Now it's been reported that the strain of last night's semi-finals elimination all proved to be just too much for one dancer.
Each week the dancers go backstage and chat to reporters on the post-show press line, but last night one couple was conspicuously absent. According to E! Online, one half of the eliminated couple "was so upset about [their] elimination from the competition that she was unable to hold it together for interviews."
!!SPOILER ALERT!! If you don't know want to know who was eliminated last night, you might want to stop reading right about now.
Last night Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy saw their uneven and bad-tempered ride come to an abrupt end. Falling at the penultimate fence and being sent home just when the Mirror Ball trophy seems within their grasp is always so very hard for the eliminated couple, but it hit the US soccer goalie especially hard.
Solo was gracious in defeat on-air, thanking her fans and saying "This competition is one of the toughest competitions I've ever been a part of. ... Instead of trying to win a mirror ball trophy, I'm going to try to win a gold medal this summer at the Olympics." However, she was reportedly "distraught" backstage and was escorted out in tears after doing one interview.
The tears were in stark contrast to Solo and Maks' defiant stance after their performance Monday night when they first challenged judge Carrie Ann Inaba during the show, and then both dropped the f-bomb talking about her backstage.
Last night Maks tweeted his thanks to Solo and their supporters: "THANK YOU! To all the fans that voted for @hopesolo and me! Its YOUR show! Without you we don't exist! And congratulations to the finalist!"
Meanwhile, the other couples celebrated their success backstage after the show. The newly svelte Ricki Lake said she was really surprised to have made it to the finale, telling OTRC that "I take direction well and I'm a quick learner, but I'm not light on my feet." However, she's worked really hard and the punishing 'DWTS' training regime has taken its toll. "We worked so hard. I really busted my a** and I've lost a lot of [weight]." (Seriously, when will ABC launch the official 'DWTS' diet and exercise plan? It's a potential goldmine, guys!)
J.R. Martinez, who's been dancing with a bum ankle this week, said that while a part of him had always been confident that he had a shot at making it all the way to the finals, he was scared last night when he thought elimination was on the cards for him. He thanked his fans and praised his fellow competitors: "Ricki and Rob, they just killed it!"
Rob Kardashian -- who this season's gone from "Who He?" obscurity to surprise front-runner -- said he's confident going into the finals. "There's no turning back. ... I want that trophy now more than ever."
Tell us: Do you think the right pair was eliminated?
