Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has assured Heurelho Gomes that he is not surplus to requirements at White Hart Lane, after watching the goalkeeper star in his side's Europa League win on Thursday.
Having been Spurs' No. 1 since signing from PSV in 2008, Gomes has dropped behind Brad Friedel and Carlo Cudicini in the club's pecking order and is yet to make a single Premier League appearance in the current campaign.
The Brazilian has become frustrated with his lack of playing time and Redknapp has previously admitted that he could leave the club in Ja nuary.
But on a rare start against Rubin Kazan, Gomes impressed with a series of excellent saves, helping Spurs to a 1-0 victory over the Russians, and Redknapp insists there is a chance that the 30-year-old could stay at the club.
"I was pleased for Gomes. He was great," Redknapp said. "Carlo Cudicini has been playing well and so has Brad but I played the big man tonight and he did well. I would like to think that Gomes still has a big future here.
"But he wants to play more, obviously, and at the moment he is disappointed that Brad has come in, but Brad has done great. Gomes is top class, when he is on his game he is a great keeper."
But Gomes is likely to seek pastures new in January as he bids to make Brazil's World Cup squad in 2014.
