Stevens, who held talks with Hamburg over their coaching vacancy before joining
the Gelsenkirchen club on Tuesday, was indebted to Klaas Jan Huntelaar for the
three points.
The Holland striker opened the scoring after 13 minutes, heading in Marco
Hoger's cross, only for Mladen Petric to level seven minutes before half-time.
Huntelaar grabbed the winner with 17 minutes to go, cleverly flicking in
Christian Fuchs' centre.
Werder Bremen failed in their bid to join Bayern Munich at the top of the table
as they were beaten 3-2 by Hannover in an entertaining northern derby.
Mohammed Abdellaoue scored a hat-trick for the Reds with Marko Arnautovic
netting and receiving a red card for Bremen.
Claudio Pizarro gave Bremen hope of getting a point when he made it 3-2 in the
83rd minute, but Thomas Schaaf's men could not find an equaliser with just 10
men.
