(CNN) -- Bayern Munich opened up a five-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga with a 4-0 thumping of Hertha Berlin Saturday in the Allianz Arena.

Bayern, who have been in superb league form, made it seven wins from nine games, with only one defeat, as they overpowered the visitors.

Mario Gomez, Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger scored first half goals.

The prolific Gomez added his second from a penalty in the 69th minute to seal victory for Jupp Heynckes' men, who saw favorable results elsewhere.

Borussia Monchengladbach looked set to win 2-1 win at home to Bayer Leverkusen but the visitors leveled with three minutes to go through striker Andre Schuerrle.

The point lifted Moenchengladbach into second behind Bayern, with reigning champions Borussia Dortmund a further point back with Stuttgart and Werder Bremen.

Dortmund beat Bremen 2-0 Friday night to improve their position after a shaky spell.

In other matches, Wolfsburg's Mario Mandzukic scored twice in their 2-1 home win against Nuremberg, while Stuttgart picked up a vital 2-0 home win against Hoffenheim.

Newly promoted FC Augsburg won 1-0 at Mainz.

Schalke were playing at home to Kaiserslautern later Saturday and could move into second spot with a win.
