Makau ran alone for the final 12 kms to break the previous mark of 2:03:59 set by Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie on the same course three years ago. It was the fifth time the men's world record has fallen on the flat Berlin course through the heart of the city.

The 26-old-Kenyan won the Berlin race last year and finished third in London this year after falling 22 kms into the 42.195 kms race.

"I had no problems today," he told a television reporter. "Today everything went well."

Gebrselassie, who has won the Berlin marathon four times, headed the leading group until just before the 27-km mark when he pulled up in obvious pain. He bent over double but then stepped back on to the road within a minute but was unable to finish the race.
