Hargreaves, 30, has been plagued with injury problems in recent years, making just 18 Premier League starts for Manchester United during four seasons at Old Trafford before being released by the club at the end of last campaign.

The former Bayern Munich player was snapped up by United's rivals City on transfer deadline day this summer and is now in line to make his debut for the club in their Carling Cup meeting with Birmingham on Wednesday.

Ahead of hi s City bow, Hargreaves told the Independent: "Yes, I've written down a few targets. I'll keep those to myself but I just want to get back and play football.

"That's what I've done for a long time but it's been taken away from me. I've missed it. All the times I've played for a team I think I've helped them to get better and I hope that will be true of my time here."

Of the possibility of getting back into the England squad, he said: "I'm a competitive person. I like to set my targets high. I've never not succeeded in achieving something that I've set myself out to achieve - so yes.

"I've just got to take it step by step. I've just got to get back in training, consistently playing. It's a natural progression. If I do a great job here, then I will be in the England team probably again. So we'll take it step by step first."
