Messi, 24, has now hit 127 goals in La Liga, 39 in the Champions League, 17 in the Copa del Rey, eight in the Spanish Supercup, two in the Club World Cup, and one in the European Supercup according to Sport.es.

The tally of 194 in all competitions, which he reached with a brace in the 5-0 win over BATE Borisov on Wednesday night, puts him level with the legendary Ladislao Kubala, who took 12 years to reach his total.

After the game Messi told TV3: "I'm ve ry happy for having equalled a man so great and so historic ... I would like to be the [all-time] top scorer, it would be nice for me."

Team-mate David Villa added to AS: "Messi will always continue scoring goals. We are very happy to have him in our team."

Meanwhile, manager Pep Guardiola was understandably pleased for his star playmaker, telling AS: "Messi has matched a Barcelona legend and he is still just 24 [years old]. I cannot say anything more about him, I can only congratulate him."

Messi has only played for seven so far since making his debut in 2004 and is now closing on Cesar Rodriguez's record of 235 which was set between 1939 and 1955.
