"Maybe he just strained himself from training," O'Neill told the Dan Patrick Show on the eve of the race. "Just a freakish thing. I'm bummed we're not participating. Whoever wins will be a special horse."

O'Neill was scheduled to hold a news conference later on Friday to discuss his decision to withdraw the horse, whose bid to capture the elusive Triple Crown had captured the imagination of millions of Americans.

The three-year-old, who won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes in his last two starts, was attempting to become just the 12th hors e, and the first since Affirmed in 1978, to complete the treble.

Eleven horses have won the first two legs since Affirmed in 1978 but failed at the last hurdle. I'll Have Another is the first horse since then to pull out of the race.
