Harry Redknapp's long-term future as Tottenham manager is in the balance with the Premier League club in no rush to extend his contract.
Redknapp, who has one year left on his current deal, was in a strong bargaining position back in February but his Spurs side slumped towards the business end of the season and negotiations with the club's owner have stalled.
Spurs finished fourth in the Premier League but missed out on the final Champions League qualifying place as Chelsea, who finished the season in sixth, won the European Cup to take their spot.
Tottenham were in the top three for much of th e campaign but a loss of form, which coincided with the clamour for Redknapp to replace ousted England manager Fabio Capello, saw them slip behind arch-rivals Arsenal in the final standings.
A source close to proceedings told ESPN: "The situation over a new contract is far from clear, as the situation has changed from some time ago when the club were eager to sort out a new deal.
"But they are no longer in such a rush after the collapse of the team since the England situation arose, and the failure to qualify for the Champions League.
"The situation is tricky if the manager goes into the season with only one year left. That is going to cause a problem in the dressing room, for obvious reasons."
Redknapp has hired Wayne Rooney's agent as he enters a crucial period in his negotiations but the suspicion is that Spurs are now reviewing their long-term options with David Moyes and Roberto Martinez being touted as potential successors, should contracts talk s completely break down.
The former West Ham and Portsmouth boss wants to stay at White Hart Lane, but Spurs may prefer to see how he gets on in the final year of his contract to assess the progress of the team.
Redknapp's current deal is worth £3.5 million per year, with a potential £1 million bonus for achieving Champions League qualification.
