(CNN) -- Barcelona notched up the pressure on La Liga leaders Real Madrid with a 4-0 home win over Getafe Tuesday as Alexis Sanchez scored twice.

The victory left them a single point behind their arch rivals, who face a testing derby match at Atletico Madrid Wednesday.

It was Barcelona's 10th straight league win as Chile star Sanchez showed his quality with a fine double strike.

He opened the scoring in the 13th minute after being put through by Lionel Messi.

Argentina star Messi got on the scoresheet himself just before halftime with Sanchez adding his second in the 73rd minute.

Pedro rounded off the scoring a minute later to complete the rout.

At half time, Barcelona's sporting director confirmed that their French international defender Eric Abidal was undergoing a liver transplant.

"We have no news. We are waiting for the doctors to give us an update, but operations such as this take long time," Andoni Zubizarreta told AFP.

"We know he's in the best possible hands."

Supporters in the Nou Camp paid a special tribute to the 32-year-old defender in the 22nd minute of the match -- the same number as his squad shirt.

Barcelona announced on March 15 that Abidal would have a liver transplant "in the coming weeks", about a year after the player had a tumor removed from the same organ.

He made a remarkable recovery and played a few minutes in Barcelona's Champions League semifinal win over Real Madrid on May 3 of 2011.

Abidal has made 20 appearances for Barcelona this season before news emerged of his impending liver transplant.
