Chelsea have the chance to get their hands on the trophy that has thus far eluded them after they knocked out holders Barcelona on Tuesday. However, if the Blues are crowned European champions and finish outside the top four in the Premier League, they will qualify for next season's Champions League, taking the place of the fourth-placed side.

Newcastle are currently fourth, and afte r such a superb season Pardew says it would be harsh for the Magpies to miss out on Europe's elite competition.

"It would be a kick in the teeth for us," Pardew said. "We don't want Chelsea to win that Champions League final because we want that spot, along with Tottenham and Arsenal. Their fans probably feel the same. It would be very harsh if we finished fourth and then missed out on the Champions League.

"The Champions League is the very top of football with those teams, players and venues. It is where you want to be if you can. We are already in the Europa League, that is done. We are there, so that's a major achievement for all of us at the club.

"We now have this opportunity for the Champions League. We have some tough, tough games and sometimes that may be a better way to do it.

"If we do make it, we have to beat some of the best teams, Wigan next, Chelsea, Manchester City and Everton, but we are well set. We are in good form and our player s are relaxed and calm and we go to Wigan trying to win. There is no point in trying to draw."
