The 27-year-old Barea, a native of Puerto Rico, averaged 9.5 points and 3.9 assists in 20.5 minutes per game last season for the NBA champion Dallas Mavericks.
Barea, a 6-foot sparkplug in his five seasons with Dallas, started the final three games of the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat, scoring 17 points in Game Five and 15 points on 7-for-12 shooting in the title-clinching Game Six.
He said he welcomed the challenge of moving from the champion Mavericks to an expanded role with the Timberwolves, who had the worst record in the league last year.
"I had to leave Puerto Rico to go to college (Northeastern) and that was hard," he said. "I had to go to Dallas and prove myself in the NBA and that was hard, too. Helping this team out is going to be extremely hard but I'm ready and I'm excited."
