The 20-year-old Hedman was the team's second overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and has been a mainstay of their defense since joining the team.

Hedman produced a career-best 26 points for the Lightning last season and was a critical presence during Tampa Bay's run to the Eastern Conference Finals.

He has two goals so far this season and is tied for second on the team in blocked shots.

"I love it in Tampa Bay with the Lightning and I will do all I can to help this organization be successful on and off the ice," Hedman told the team's website (lightningnhl.com).

"I'd like to thank our owner Mr (Jeff) Vinik and of course general manager Steve Yzerman for helping me move forward in my career."
