Left-handed batter Brantley, who is hitting a career-best .266 with 24 doubles and seven home runs this year, has been limited to just 12 starts in August.

His spot on the roster was filled by designated hitter Jim Thome, who was claimed on waivers Thursday from the Minnesota Twins for a player to be named later.

Right-hander Tomlin has gone 12-7 this season for the Indians, who have slipped 6-1/2 games behind the pacesetting Detroit Tigers in the American League Central standings amid a rash of injuries.

Designated hitter Travis Hafner was ruled out on Monday with a strained right foot, joining Grady Sizemore, Jason Kipnis, Carlos Carrasco and Trevor Crowe on the disabled list.
