World News - In order for soldiers to feel comfortable during duty in Afghanistan and Iraq, the United States (U.S.) spent 20 billion dollars per year for the cost of space cooling (air conditioner / air conditioning).
The amount is much larger than NASA's budget. Even more than that paid by British Petroleum to replace the damage caused by leakage of oil refineries in the Gulf of Mexico. It also requests for member countries of the G-8 to 'guide' new democracy in Egypt and Tunisia.
"When you consider the cost to send fuel oil to some of the most isolated places in the world, if you count the infrastructure, the number reached 20 billion U.S. dollars," said Steven Anderson in an interview on U.S. radio program, NPR.
Anderson is a retired brigadier general who served as head of logistics when the U.S. military in Iraq led by General David Patreaus.
Why can it cost that much?
Electricity to AC at a military post in remote areas in Afghanistan for example, the fuel must be shipped through Karachi, Pakistan. From there, send a tank truck as far as 800 miles traveled to Afghanistan in 18 days by street sometimes tiny fraction better than "goat path", explained Anderson.
"Not to mention the risks to be faced at every mile along the way," he added.
Anderson estimates that more than 1,000 soldiers were killed while escorting a convoy of fuel, which is still a main target of attacks by militants.
