World News - Libya refused to move the International Criminal Court (ICC) issuing an arrest warrant for Libyan leader Moammar Khadafy Monday. Libya also reject the authority of the ICC.
"Libya did not accept the ICC's decision that the Western world is a tool to prosecute the leaders in the Third World," said Justice Minister Mohammad al-Qamoodi at a press conference in Tripoli, capital of Libya. "The leader of the revolution and his son did not hold any official position in the Libyan government and therefore they have no connection with ICC statement against them," added Qamoodi.
Khadafy did not hold official positions in the political system in Libya, although he has ruled the country more than 41 years. ICC based in The Hague, Netherlands, has issued an arrest warrant against Khadafy, his son Saif al-Islam, and the Libyan intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi on charges of crimes against humanity. The prosecutors suspect they are involved in the killing of civilian demonstrators who began raging in the country since last February Khadafy in opposition to the government that had lasted 41 years.
ICC judges, Mmasenono Sanji Monageng, said Khadafy and his son was accused of "prepare and organize a plan to prevent and cope with various ways of civil demonstrations" against the regime Khadafy. While Senussi accused of attacks carried out against the opponents.
Although it seems unlikely the decision will result in arrest Khadafy as long as he remains in power and was in Libya, it was still welcomed by the Libyan rebels and their supporters, NATO, as a sign that Khadafy has no legitimacy to govern the oil-rich country.
