World News - Heavy rains that hit central and southern China caused flooding and landslides that killed at least 94 people, local media reported on Sunday (06/12/2011).
In Yueyang, Hunan Province, weather stations recorded rainfall of more than 200 millimeters in six hours, rainfall that occurs every 300 years, China Daily News Service quoted local weather officials.
In the village Maojiazu, Yueyag, heavy rains caused landslides that hit 24 houses and killing at least 20 people, with seven others missing brought a big stone and mud, most likely dead, Xinhua news agency said.
"The region is concentrated, the intensity and duration of rains recently caused many casualties and damage to property in several areas," said Chen Lei, Minister of Water Resources who also monitors the Drought Mitigation Center and the State Flood Control in the report on its website.
The office warned that heavy rain expected to hit the middle and lower Yangtze River could trigger a flood in a drought-stricken area of less than two weeks ago.
On Saturday night, the flood hit areas in 13 provinces, killing 94 people and 78 people missing, destroyed 465,000 hectares of crops and caused 27,100 houses and other buildings collapsed, said the office of flood and drought mitigation.
The death toll does not include those killed in the province of Hunan and in other places. Approximately 23 people from those who were killed took place in Xianning and Hubei Province, central China, where the rain caused a landslide that also wounded more than 100 people and left 10 people missing.
"The dry season has recently led to dry land in the area and increase the risk of landslides in the rainy season now, " Xinhua quoted a local official.
