Gaddafi Ready to Make Democratic Elections

World News - Libyan strongman Moammar Gaddafi expressed readiness to hold internationally supervised elections within three months, said Seif al-Islam, son of Moammar Gaddafi, told Italian newspaper on Thursday (06/16/2011).

"Elections could be held as soon as possible and with international supervision. This is the easiest solution to get out of the impasse in Libya," said Seif al-Islam told the daily Corriere della Sera correspondent in Tripoli.

"We could hold elections within three months. At the latest by the end of the year. Transparency will be ensured with the support of the presence of international observers," said Seif al-Islam, which is likely to be his successor.

Seif al-Islam said the election would run smoothly and clean because it is under the supervision of the European Union or the African Union, UN, or even the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). "The mechanism will be formulated together until elections next implementation is really clean and not guaranteed of any suspicion of fraud," he said.

The reporter had accidentally met Seil al-Islam in the Mercure Hotel in Tripoli. The journalist was planning on doing an interview with Foreign Minister Abdelati al-Obeidi, but instead Seif al-Islam emerged to replace Secretary of State.

"Let us carry out opinion polls toward a fair and clean elections. I believe the best will win," said Seif al-Islam.
