Approximately 800 people were killed in the city this week Duekoue Ivory Coast. The number of those known to hundreds of deaths based on reports from the International Red Cross (ICRC).
"We get information that approximately 800 people were killed on Tuesday, March 29 last, in Duekoue. Residents who died were victims of the riots that occurred in the region," said ICRC spokeswoman Dorothea Krimitsas told Reuters on Saturday (04/02/2011).
Volunteer ICRC visited areas in Duekoue Carrefour on Thursday, March 31 and Friday, April 1 to provide assistance. They also have evacuated 28 bodies of riot victims to the local cemetery.
"Our colleagues see hundreds of dead bodies. We suspect the bodies were victims of violence. Since Monday, tens of thousands of people have gone from Duekoue. This is not the first time there were riots among people occurs," he continued.
Head of the ICRC delegation Ivory Coast Dominique Liengme assess this incident very shocking. He saw the brutality and scale that assessed the number of victims is too large.
Earlier in earlier this week the ICRC issued a report that thousands of people have been killed or injured in post-election violence since last November.
Until now fierce fighting between troops supporting the elected president Alassane Quattara forces with supporters of former President Laurent Gbagbo, are still ongoing in Abidjan.
The ICRC condemned the attacks on civilians and warned all warring parties to protect civilians.
