Turkey plans to take over temporary control of the airport in Libya's second largest city, Benghazi. The city was the base of the rebellion against the regime of Muammar Gaddafi.
According to news agency Associated Press, the announcement was delivered by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Monday, March 28, 2011. According to Erdogan, control of security in Benghazi airport, it is necessary to secure the lines of humanitarian assistance to the people of Libya.
As a participant Mission International Coalition of Libya, Turkey sent four frigates and a submarine to help the operation to Libya arms embargo, as mandated by the UN Security Council.
Erdogan also said that the Turkish army participated in enforcement operations fly zones, to ensure that no aircraft Gaddafi regime to attack the people who rebelled.
Turkey is a member of the North Atlantic Organization (NATO), which since the end of last week took over the no-fly zone enforcement operations in Libya from the US-led coalition control.
However, Turkey did not participate in the mission of land attack on military targets of Gaddafi. According to Erdogan, Turkey is determined not to use "weapons or bullets" in the face of Libyan citizens.
