Strong earthquake that shook Myanmar last Thursday night has killed more than 40 people. It is feared the death toll will continue to grow today after the conditions in remote areas is known.
A Myanmar government radio station broadcast, 41 people listed as dead and 48 people were injured. It is said, 244 houses, 14 Buddhist monasteries, and nine government buildings damaged.
An official from the UN World Food Program says there are many casualties and serious damage in the village of Mong Lin, 8 kilometers from Tachileik. Government radio station said there were 29 victims killed in the village and 16 others injured.
Government newspaper New Light of Myanmar reported 15 houses collapsed in the village Tarlay, while state radio station said 11 people were killed and 29 people injured. Other UN officials said a hospital in Tarlay partially destroyed, as well as the bridge. This further complicates access to the village.
Government newspapers also reported that two people were killed in Tachileik, including a child aged 4 years. It is said, six people were injured in the city located just across the border province of Mae Sai in Chiang Rai, Thailand.
UN officials said drugs will soon be sent to quake-hit areas along with the assessment team that will cooperate with the Myanmar Red Cross.
UN officials testified anonymously because of the Government of Myanmar does not like to provide information that has not passed to the media.
