Global smartphone market is predicted to double in 2016 later. This growth is predicted to be triggered by the emergence of Android-based smartphone.

This prediction is leveled analyst from Ovum Research. According to research firm tersebuttotal smartphone shipments later in 2016 will reach 653 million units. Of that number, Android will be the platform that dominates the market share of approximately 20.5 percent

Launched by Cellular News, on Saturday (03/26/2011), Ovum predicts annual growth of smartphones will reach 14.5 percent between 2010 and 2016 and will contribute approximately 40 percent of the overall mobile phone market.

"Asia Pacific is a market with the largest contribution in the smartphone market with total shipments reaching 200 million units in 2016. Western Europe and North America is still a strong market with respectively 175 million and 165 million units of smartphones," said an analyst with Ovum, Adam Leach.

According to Adam, the growth of smartphones in the next five years was triggered by a variety of platforms on offer. Android is the platform that will lead with 38 percent market share, compared with Apple's IOS which is only 17.5 percent.

"Behind the Phone with Apple's existing Windows market share is not too far adrift, approximately 17.2 percent, followed by the Blackberry OS is just 16.5 percent," said Leach.

From the data presented Leach, a new four competing operating systems. In the future, Ovum expects there will be one more to enliven OS smartphone market, whether Bada, WebOS, or MeeGo.

"The cooperation between Nokia and Microsoft will be quite an impact on lowering the Symbian market. Though Nokia still hopes to ship approximately 150 million units of Symbian handsets so that the platform can still exist by 2016 later," he said.
