Brian McNamee, Clemens' former trainer, is at the core of prosecution charges that the ex-pitcher lied to Congress about using anabolic steroids and human growth hormone.

McNamee, 45, wrapped up about 10 hours of prosecution testimony on Tuesday. He detailed how he allegedly injected Clemens with the drugs from 1998 to 2001 and stashed used needles, swabs and other materials that he turned over to federal agents as evidence.

Defense attorney Rusty Hardin launched his cross-examination about 20 minutes before the trial recessed on Tuesday. He began by questioning McNamee about wearing a tie with a corporate logo to a grand jury session and about an appearance on shock jock Howard Stern's radio show.

One of Hardin's themes has been to show that McNamee tried to profit from his testimony to investigators and the 2007 Mitchell Report. The probe by former Senator George Mitchell investigated drug use in baseball and named Clemens and other players as steroid users.

Clemens' lawyers are expected to explore McNamee's alleged problems with alcohol and scrapes with law enforcement.

Clemens, 49, is being tried for a second time on federal charges of lying to the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in 2008, which was investigating drug use in Major League Baseball. His first trial ended in a mistrial last year.

Nicknamed "the Rocket," Clemens is a record seven-time winner of the annual Cy Young Awards as best pitcher. He is among the biggest names implicated in drug use in baseball.

Clemens faces one count of obstruction of Congress, three counts of making a false statement and two counts of perjury.

A former baseball strength coach, McNamee worked with Clemens when the right-hander pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays and later with the Yankees. He also worked as Clemens' personal trainer.
